Born in New Orleans 55 years ago, Søren VANDEGAARD's path into painting began unconventionally creating artwork to promote his rock and roll band. That early spark led him to sell his paintings outdoors around Jackson Square in the French Quarter, where he found both an audience and a calling. Commissions and exhibitions, carrying him from New Orleans to Passau, Germany, then New York City, and now Maastricht, Netherlands. Through every move, VANDEGAARD has stayed rooted in his signature technique, layering acrylic paint with fragments of colored tissue paper, a style that has evolved with him across decades of work.

- Artist Statement
My work sits between painting and collage: I build layered acrylic surfaces embedded with fragments of colored tissue paper across canvases of varying scale, reinterpreting 400-year-old Dutch Baroque masterworks through this signature technique. The tissue paper catches and refracts light much like the glazing techniques the Dutch masters themselves pioneered, letting torn edges and overlapping color fragments excavate and rebuild each composition rather than simply reproduce it. These paintings have survived centuries of shifting taste and meaning, and by reworking them through this tactile process, I'm asking what it means to inherit the past imperfectly in fragments: reassembled, still bearing the trace of the original.
